The Most Common Lock Problems I Fix in Bournemouth Homes

As a local locksmith working across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, I see the same lock and door issues come up again and again. Most of them start small — a stiff handle, a key that doesn’t turn smoothly, a door that needs a little “extra push” to close — and then suddenly fail at the worst possible moment.
Here are the most common problems I’m called out to fix, and what usually causes them.
1. Stiff or Grinding uPVC Door Handles
This is by far the number one issue in Bournemouth homes.
Typical signs:
Handle feels heavy or stiff
You need to lift the handle higher than normal
Key becomes harder to turn
What’s happening: The door has dropped slightly or the keeps are out of alignment. If left too long, the gearbox can fail — which turns a simple adjustment into a full mechanism replacement.
2. Failed uPVC Gearboxes
When a gearbox goes, it usually happens suddenly.
Common symptoms:
Handle spins freely
Door won’t lock or unlock
Key turns but nothing engages
Why it fails: Wear and tear, misalignment, or forcing the handle when the mechanism is under strain. Bournemouth’s coastal air doesn’t help — salt can accelerate internal wear.

3. Worn or Faulty Euro Cylinders
Euro cylinders are the most common lock type on modern doors.
Typical problems:
Key won’t go in smoothly
Key turns but doesn’t operate the lock
Cylinder spins in the door
Snapped key
Causes: Cheap cylinders, age, or internal components wearing out. I often replace these with British Standard cylinders for better security and reliability.
4. Dropped Composite Doors
Composite doors are heavy, and over time the hinges can move.
Signs:
Door rubs on the frame
You have to “lift” the door to close it
Locking becomes difficult
Risk: If ignored, the multi‑point mechanism can fail — a much more expensive repair.
5. Faulty 5‑Lever Mortice Locks
Common on wooden doors across Bournemouth’s older housing stock.
Typical issues:
Key becomes stiff
Bolt won’t throw fully
Internal levers wear out
Lock jams in the locked position
Cause: Age, lack of lubrication, or worn levers. Many older locks also don’t meet British Standard, so upgrades are often recommended.

6. Snapped or Bent Keys
This happens more often than people think.
Why:
Cheap keys cut poorly
Forcing a stiff lock
Worn cylinders
Cold weather making metal brittle
I can usually extract the broken piece without damaging the lock.
7. Misaligned Door Frames After Weather Changes
Bournemouth’s mix of coastal air, humidity and temperature swings causes frames to expand and contract.
Symptoms:
Lock works fine in the morning but not at night
Door catches on the frame
Handle becomes stiff intermittently
A simple adjustment often solves it.
If you’re noticing any of these signs…
Most lock problems start small and get worse over time. A quick adjustment or repair now can prevent a full lockout later — and save you money.
I cover Bournemouth, Winton, Charminster, Moordown, Ensbury Park, Kinson, Southbourne, Boscombe, Westbourne and nearby areas. If your door or lock isn’t behaving as it should, I’m always happy to take a look.
